Jian Ming survives in a Guangzhou urban village by running a fake employment agency that cheats desperate migrant job-seekers. His small escapes are rooftop Chinese-opera performances and a secret relationship with Ah Fang, a young mistress supported by a wealthier man. The film follows people living at the edges of the city as scams, desire, crime and economic precarity pull their lives together.
