小荷是中国北方农村的一名年轻教师，相信学习应该来自发现和体验，而不是机械服从规则。她的教学方式和私人生活引发同事排斥并最终失去工作。来到北京后，她希望从事新闻工作，却再次面对体制性的妥协要求。在一次次失业和经济压力中，她必须决定为了生存愿意放弃多少独立和原则。
Xiao He is a free-thinking teacher in rural northern China whose unconventional teaching and refusal to follow rigid rules put her in conflict with colleagues. After losing her job, she moves to Beijing hoping to work in journalism, but again encounters pressure to conform. Moving from one precarious job to another, she must decide how much of her independence she is willing to surrender in order to survive.
