影片是张元剧情片《看上去很美》的幕后纪录，从选角一直拍到杀青，尤其把镜头放在小演员身上：他们如何理解电影、学习表演、想家哭闹、争吵又交朋友。拍电影的过程本身逐渐变成一份真实的童年记录，同时也收录张元与儿童演员合作的思考。
This behind-the-scenes documentary follows the making of Zhang Yuan’s feature Little Red Flowers, from casting through the end of production. It focuses especially on the child actors: how they understand filmmaking, learn to perform, become homesick, quarrel and make friends. The production process becomes a record of childhood itself, alongside director Zhang Yuan’s reflections on working with young children.
