1957年，约两百名教师、学生和干部因被划为“右派”而送往中国西南的国营东风农场。他们经历强迫劳动、大跃进时期失败的生产项目、饥荒以及后来的文化大革命，直到1978年才获平反。胡杰通过大量劳改人员和工作人员访谈，重建这二十余年的改造与求生经历。
In 1957, about two hundred teachers, students and cadres labelled Rightists were sent to the East Wind State Farm in southwest China. They endured forced labour, disastrous Great Leap Forward projects, famine and later the Cultural Revolution before rehabilitation in 1978. Through extensive interviews with former inmates and staff, Hu Jie reconstructs more than two decades of political re-education and survival.
