故事发生在1960年的戈壁滩夹边沟明水分场。被反右运动打成“右派”的知识分子和干部被送到这里劳动改造，在地窝子宿舍和荒漠工地之间承受饥饿、严寒、过度劳作与死亡。影片集中呈现这些人在极端环境中求生的过程。
Set in 1960 at the Mingshui annex of the Jiabiangou labour camp in the Gobi Desert, the film follows men branded as Rightists after the Anti-Rightist Campaign. Starvation, cold, exhaustion and death dominate their daily existence as prisoners struggle to survive in dugout dormitories and on a vast desert work site.
