As coal mining transforms Yulin from a poor northwestern town into a boom economy, people rush into every link of the industry—mining, transport and information brokerage. Using interviews, character portraits, observation, folk music and black humour, the film maps the feverish pursuit of ‘black gold’ and the social anxiety and human costs accompanying China’s rapid economic expansion.
