1989年政治风波之后的冬天，大学刚毕业的郭松和学法语的女友在北京租下一间破旧平房开始同居。他被分配到小工厂工作，却对现实生活提不起兴趣；昔日同学也各自散去，陷入不同形式的妥协和困窘。无法摆脱那个夏天留下的精神压力，他逐渐被琐碎生活淹没，并在一位陌生诗人的诗句中越走越远。
In the winter after the political upheaval of 1989, recent university graduate Guo Song begins living with his girlfriend in a shabby rented house in Beijing. Assigned to a small factory, he has little interest in work and watches former classmates disperse into equally compromised lives. Trapped in mundane reality and unable to resolve what the previous summer has done to him, he drifts toward the words of an unknown poet and an inward crisis of ideals.
