Also known in English as Cures That Kill, the documentary investigates attempts to ‘convert’ gay people to heterosexuality in China. Gay men describe experiences of psychiatric, medical and religious conversion practices, while mental-health professionals discuss how prejudice and misunderstanding shaped earlier treatment. The film argues that homosexuality is not an illness and exposes the psychological and physical harm created by so-called cures.
