1957年反右运动后，一批兰州大学学生被下放到甘肃农村劳动改造，并亲眼看到大跃进时期虚假的丰产报告、贫困与大规模饥饿。他们秘密创办《星火》，揭露现实并批评政治体制。影片重建这份地下刊物的诞生，以及随后发生的抓捕、判刑和处决。
After the 1957 Anti-Rightist Campaign, several Lanzhou University students sent to rural Gansu witnessed false harvest reports, poverty and mass starvation during the Great Leap Forward. They secretly created the magazine Sparks of Fire to expose these conditions and criticize the political system. The documentary reconstructs the publication, arrests, imprisonment and executions that followed.
