Structured in three linked episodes set in 1981, 1991 and 2001, the film follows queer relationships under pressure from family, marriage, illness and social discipline. In the final section, Xiaobo takes in Xiaogang, a former sexual partner living with AIDS, and is driven into sex work when he cannot afford the cost of care.
