在广东一个偏远山村，贫困农民阿水既要照顾怀孕的妻子和上学的妹妹，又要面对弟弟即将被执行死刑的现实。为了筹出可能换取改判所需的巨款，一家人被逼向越来越绝望的选择，包括卖掉尚未出生的孩子；一名共产党员教师和一位巡回传教士则分别给出完全不同的建议。
In a remote Guangdong village, poor farmer Ah Shui struggles to support his pregnant wife and younger sister while his younger brother faces execution. Hoping to raise the large sum needed to commute the sentence, the family is pushed toward desperate choices, including selling the unborn child, while a Communist schoolteacher and a travelling Christian clergyman offer sharply different forms of guidance.
